History: Heroes of Our Time

Heroes of Our Time

Among the many talents and attributes the late Mr Richard Gray and former resident had, was as a phenomenal researcher of military history and the stories of individuals that paid the ultimate price for their service to their country, including the Wellington BK440 crash into fields just outside the village in December 1943. In recognition of his work to highlight the plight of the crew of BK440, a plaque has been designed and mounted next to the village war memorial.

Much of Mr Gray’s work has been captured on an excellent website created by his family and is based on the 2600+ documents and 6300+ photographs that he gathered. It is a huge source of local information including airfields, military bases and useful links for anyone wanting to follow up with their own research. The website is simply called Heroes of Our Time and can be reached by clicking here.

Our thanks go to his daughter Donna Gray and her partner Darren Rose for taking the time to create the website which honours among the many, the Hindolveston soldiers that served and died in WWI as well as the crew of the Wellington BK440.

The plaque was in place for Remembrance Sunday in 2018 and has since been visited by relatives of at least one of the fallen crew members in the summer of 2019.
