AFTERSUN (12)

The stunning debut from director Charlotte Wells,”Aftersun” juxtaposes a hopeful coming-of-age story with a poignant family portrait that leaves an indelible impression. At a fading resort in the late 1990s, 11-year-old Sophie treasures time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view for Sophie, Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship. Oscar nominee: Best Actor.
“An astounding first feature – one of the most powerful you’ll find in any cinema this year” (The Independent)

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (15)

A haunting French costume drama set in the 18th century. Painter Marianne is commissioned by an affluent countess to paint the wedding portrait of her sheltered but headstrong daughter Héloïse.  While posing as her hired companion, Marianne is instructed to complete the portrait in secret, observing Héloïse by day and painting her by night. However, as the two women grow closer, their intimacy and attraction begins to blossom, paving the way for a simmering, star-crossed romance. French language with English subtitles.
“Mesmerised by the female gaze, this is a perceptive, erotic exploration of power” (The Guardian).
